Powerlifting Gear and
Accessories in Australia
What Gear Do You Need for Powerlifting?
Powerlifting gear is important whether you're training or competing. But what's the difference between equipped and not equipped lifting? Geared powerlifting involves using supportive equipment like bench shirts and deadlift suits. It allows the athlete to lift more than an ‘raw lifter’, which is someone that is not ‘equipped’. Competition gear must comply with federation rules. Each federation in Australia, like Powerlifting Australia, Australian Powerlifting Leagueand the Australian Powerlifting Alliancehas its own specific regulations. Pre competition, all items of apparel are examined by referees to check if they meet the rules of the federation. Always check the current rules before competing because they can change over time.

What Gear is Allowed in Powerlifting?
Understanding what gear is allowed can help you prepare properly for both training and competition. Here’s a rundown:
Powerlifting Competitions:
Powerlifting Australia, has the following rules:
Squat & Bench Press:
Required items: powerlifting suit, tshirt, briefs and shoes
Optional items: headband, belt, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and/or bra
Deadlift:
Required items: powerlifting suit, briefs, socks and shoes
Optional items: tshirt, headband, belt, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and/or a bra.
Caps, hats, gloves or hand straps may not be worn when the lifting is on the platform. There are also specific rules about the thickness (13mm) of the belt, materials of each items so it’s a good idea to check before attending.
Powerlifting Training:
When training the real question is, is the lifting gear going to benefit my workout and lifting goals. Lifting belts increase intra-abdominal pressure, providing better core stability, while wrist straps improve wrist stability & lifting straps help improve grip on the bar. If your preparing for a competition, it’s a good idea to train in full gear so you can be as comfortable as possible coming into a competition.
